Monhegan Magic
You Need to Join Us Out Here
Our photography workshop on Monhegan this June was fantastic. We had a great group of students who were treated to some dynamic and interesting conditions. There really is nothing like the light out here.
Fog and mist are prevalent on the island, but for some reason, I’ve not witnessed much myself. That changed in a big way on this trip. These really are some of the best conditions for photography.
As always, the dichotomy of the wild/rugged side of the island, teeming with natural beauty, and the quaint village side provided an awesome study in contrast.
As you’ll see, this trip was mostly about the wild side of Monhegan. I think I owe a lot of this to the influence of the weather and to Kurt, the co-leader on this trip. He’s a wild man.
I tried some less-often used techniques, including pulling out a nd filter to blur the water crashing around the rocks below Burnt Head. I even made a few macro photos of the lady slippers in Cathedral Woods, something the ladies on the workshop inspired me to do with their love of flowers, especially Lisa.
I loved the contrasting textures of the moss and blades of grass, along with a few of last year’s fallen leaves. The ferns were also in their full glory alongside the paths through Cathedral Woods.
We did find time to photograph some more man-made stuff, too! I loved capturing these details of the weathering that is so prevalent on the island, including this capture of a rusty door handle and chipping paint around it. Can you tell what I photographed in the second image below?
It wouldn’t be a Williamson workshop without some epic light, I guess ;-), and we were indeed treated to some on the last night as the weather finally cleared and some thunderstorms passed by to the north. We ran back to this lupine field by the Trailing Yew with a sweet view of the village to make the best of it.
Then the we all met back up at the lighthouse and captured the clouds lighting up above this iconic structure.
We have just a few more spots on our trips out here in August and September! You can read more about the trip and join us by clicking on the links below. These will likely go quickly, so sign up now.
