Welcome 2025!
It’s been crazy as can be for our family this past month here in Maine as we moved from Bath to Sheepscot. Things are finally settling down, somewhat, and I’m looking forward to some ice skating this week thanks to the extremely cold temps and lack of snow, and then, hopefully, some snow before our Winter in Acadia Workshop and then my annual trip to climb Katahdin in Baxter State Park. January is an exciting month!
I was driving to Portland to pick up our au pair yesterday when I noticed the sky doing amazing things. I didn’t have a lot of time, but since I was right on Route 1 in Brunswick, I knew of a spot to pull off.
The views from the Androscoggin Swinging Bridge are some of my favorite around. This side looks southwest at the old Black Bridge, which used to have a deck for cars below the railroad bridge when I was young, but has since been removed.
I wish we had some snow to brighten up the foreground, but I’ll take a sky like this any day. It was absolutely incredible! The wave formations in the clouds are caused by orographic influences, in this case, air moving over the White Mountains. I saw some lenticular clouds before making this photo, but the trees are obscuring them from this vantage point.
I have some exciting news about two big publications of my work in the next month here. Stay tuned!

What a fantastic sky :-)
Phenomenal colors and beautiful setting. Luck rewards you (hopefully you bought a lottery ticket!).
