I love these photos so much! ❤ I'm a Maine girl living in Fairbanks, Alaska, where we see beautiful Auroras from August thru April every year. I never thought in a million years that I'd see the Aurora Borealis shining so bright and brilliant over my home state of Maine!! Thank you so much, Benjamin Williamson Photography, for capturing this amazing once-in-a-lifetime event! ❤
That night was one of the rare times the lights looked enough like the photos as seen by the naked eye to forgive the camera its advantage. I can’t say I’ve ever walked out my door to see a magenta night sky.
What an amazing experience, and thank you for sharing not only your (as always) fabulous photos but also the whole process of getting them. Sadly I failed to plan ahead -- I knew they were forecast but assumed that, being near Boston and faced with light pollution, I'd have to drive a long way to see them. I'm also dealing with a torn ACL and am very reluctant to be on uneven ground in the dark. By the time I started seeing images, from the Florida Keys even (!!), and realized that I could have viewed them nearby and from a parking lot, I'd had an adult beverage. Discretion being the better part of valor, I stayed home. If there's another opportunity for an impressive display in the future, I will definitely try to take advantage of it. I'm very grateful to you and your fellow photographers for bringing such beautiful images home to us. (p.s. The CNN interview was so cool -- I hope lots of people discover your website and work as a result!)
I'm sorry you weren't able to see them, but it sounds like it just wasn't the right time for you. There WILL be other opportunities. If you are in the Boston area, one of the best places to travel to if they are forecast again is Lake Chocorua in NH. I would definitely consider making the journey. It's so worth it!
Thanks for sharing your photo story of that night! Fun to hear where you went and how you felt about what you saw versus what the camera saw. We saw them here in Berea, Kentucky, and I was really surprised at what my phone saw versus what I saw! Your photos always inspire! Thanks!
Yes. First time seeing them and a lifelong dream! Who'd have thought that this somewhat reluctantly transplanted New Englander would finally see them in Kentucky!?!?
STUNNING! It's a dream to see the northern lights in Maine and your photos are just amazing. If I can never see it in person there I'm so glad to at least have yours to look at!
I hope you are able to experience them here, too! There are many good viewing areas, especially when you start getting into Northern Maine, even during smaller displays.
That's awesome, Pat. I made the opposite journey. Grew up in Mississippi, moved to Maine at age 16. Maine Maritime seems like a great school and what a unique life of being out on the water all the time!
Absolutely exquisite!! And isn’t it mind-blowing that the camera sees so much more than the naked eye!! Thanks so much for sharing that extraordinary night with us all. What a week it’s been! 🤗🤗
Epic captures. The aurora above the lighthouse is the best aurora image I've ever seen. Well done!

Exactly! Yes, there really was a lot of color and light without the help of the camera.
Thank you for sharing these truly awe-inspiring photos of the northern lights.
So nice
What an incredible experience! I tried to see them early in the evening down here in Georgia, but didn't get much.
Fantastic images, particularly of the 'lights over the lighthouse..
Absolutely beautiful photos!
